Kolkata-Howrah Tunnel Road: New Underwater Road to Relieve Bridge Traffic, 8-Km Tunnel Set for Construction

Kolkata-Howrah Tunnel Road New Underwater Road to Relieve Bridge Traffic

In a major infrastructure move, Kolkata and Howrah will soon be connected by an underground road tunnel beneath the Ganges. This ambitious project, modeled after the Metro Rail tunnel linking the two cities, is part of the central government’s plan to enhance transportation in the region. Union Minister of State for Shipping Shantanu Thakur recently confirmed the initiative, which aims to reduce congestion on the Howrah Bridge and the Second Hooghly Bridge.

The tunnel construction falls under the Prime Minister’s ‘Gati Shakti’ project, emphasizing swift infrastructure development. The Ministry of Shipping, Waterways, and Ports has already completed initial surveys. This project is expected to revolutionize the movement of freight and vehicles across the river, providing significant relief to existing bridges.

An investment of ₹11,000 crore has been sanctioned for the tunnel project. The entire initiative will span 15 kilometers, including an 8-km section running beneath the Ganges. The development aims to facilitate seamless travel between Kolkata and Howrah, improving transport efficiency and easing traffic bottlenecks.

The ministry has already presented the final project details in the Lok Sabha. Following the announcement, Union Minister Thakur urged Union Road and Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari to expedite the process. With the support of the Road Transport Ministry, construction is expected to begin soon, with the project aimed for completion within a year.

The proposed route for the tunnel stretches from Metiaburuj in southern Kolkata to Howrah. This tunnel is primarily intended for freight trucks, enabling better access between the port area and various national highways. The Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Port Authority first proposed this project in 2022. Extensive studies were conducted to ensure the feasibility of a truck-specific tunnel under the river.

Minister Thakur expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for approving the project, which promises to boost the region’s logistics capabilities. He stated, “We have secured all necessary clearances, and the survey report has been submitted. The work will start very soon and is expected to be completed within one year.”

Upon completion, the tunnel will significantly streamline freight movement, enabling smoother transit from Kolkata’s ports to different parts of the state and beyond. This strategic infrastructure project is set to enhance economic activity and provide a modern solution to Kolkata’s long-standing traffic challenges.
